Originally fitted on the inlet manifold side of the spacer blocks:
Bee's pretty manky ...
... with almost half of the rear asbestos block missing, but never any problems with the oft-claimed vaporisation/vapour lock:
Shiny new one, with two strange holes near the top which aren't even symmetrical ...
... although the heat shielding material ...
... is pretty thin. I pondered beefing it up with some left-over from Vee's inner-wing protection, but I'll see how it goes. With almost half of one block missing, and the old rusty surface probably radiating significantly more at the carbs than the shiny new one, it'll probably be OK (it is):
One tab and four holes on Bee's ...
... three tabs and three holes in the new one which should be OK:
There is a stainless-steel type available which some people think must be better but is probably only worth it for those seeking bling. One person says "it works, but then so did the original type". Another says he doesn't get any vaporisation with it ... but then doesn't say that he did with the original. A pal with long-standing hot-starting problems fitted one and it made no difference. This shield confuses people by having the bracket for the accelerator cable facing the engine instead of the carbs with some saying "it is that way round because the other way wouldn't be shiny" which just about sums it up. The real reason it is that way round is because it is mounted on the other side of the spacer blocks i.e. adjacent to the carbs and not the engine, and for that reason needs a hole between the two carbs to allow the accelerator cable to pass through!
