Golf Sat-Nav Update

Checking the version:

Use the Infotainment MENU button to check what your current version is. On your display, tap the Setup option and select System information.

Compare the data given under Navigation database with the data listed on VWs website to see whether a new version is available.

  • Select your model and Infotainment system.
  • Decide which 'bundle' you want.
  • Start the download, it will take a long time even for the smallest European bundle, and why there are two different 'European Bundle 1' downloads I have no idea.
While that is going on you can start preparing your SD card ... after you have found it - probably in the glovebox.

Backing up map material:

It is recommended that you make a backup copy of the existing map material. To do so, proceed as follows:

  • Prepare the memory card for removal. Press the MENU Infotainment button and then tap Settings. Select the SD1 button then the Securely remove function button. The SD1 button will be greyed out once the data media has been logged out. You can now remove the SD-CDA card from the SD card slot by pushing and releasing it and it will pop out far enough to grip.
  • Push the switch on the SD-CDA card to Unlock and insert it into the SD card slot on your computer or into a card reader connected to your computer.
  • Create a folder - e.g. OldMap - for the backup copy of the map data on your computer.
  • Copy all data from the SD-CDA card into the folder you have just created on your computer.

Preparing the SD-CDA card:

  • If not already done push the switch on the SD-CDA card to Unlock and insert it into your computer.
  • Delete all files on the SD-CDA card or reformat your SD-CDA card. It is imperative that the card is formatted as a FAT32 partition.

The formatting process depends on your operating system. With a Windows operating system, you need to access the SD card drive and right-click on Format. The manufacturer will provide information for other operating systems. VW recommend that you have a cluster of 4,096 bytes for formatting.

Double-click the downloaded zipped file to open it, and select Extract. In the next window select the drive letter of the SD card slot in which the SD-CDA card is inserted onto which the map material is to be unzipped. Alternatively the map material can be unzipped onto your computer e.g. into another new folder such as NewMap, and then copied onto the SD-CDA card.

Once the material has been successfully unzipped and copied, log out of the SD-CDA card before you remove it (safely remove hardware and eject the medium) to ensure the complete file has been saved to the card. Remove the SD-CDA card from the computer. Now push the switch on your SD card downwards to Lock.

Installing the map material:

  • Insert the SD-CDA card into SD card slot 2 on your vehicle until it audibly clicks into place.
  • Your device will recognise the inserted SD card and the updated navigation data will now be available to you by checking the version as described at the top of this page.

However having done that the version info came up exactly the same as before. I tried setting a destination and it calculated the route, but I need to drive via somewhere that I know changed before the date given for the new version to see if it has picked it up.
